Geneva, 18 June 2024,

In a strong plea, at the first day of the 56th session of the UN Human Rights Council's session, GICJ and Association Manoah called on the international community to boost humanitarian aid for all affected populations, including refugees in neighboring countries.

In a joint statement delivered by GICJ representative Inès Najeh, the two organisations urged the Council that "Rohingyas must be granted citizenship, full rights, and assured a safe return to their homeland,".

"Ever since the coup in 2021, grave violations of human rights have increased against the Rohingya Muslims and other minorities in Myanmar," the speaker highlighted, emphasizing the urgent need for international intervention.

The escalation of hostilities between the state military and the Arakan Army has intensified the humanitarian crisis. Forced recruitment into the military, along with indiscriminate attacks by ground, sea, and air, have resulted in the deaths of hundreds of civilians. This is a clear violation of international humanitarian law. The speaker emphasised.

The representative also supported the High Commissioner’s call to refer the situation in Myanmar to the International Criminal Court (ICC), with the goal of holding military leaders accountable for committing war crimes.

Without accountability, there can be no lasting peace., the speaker concluded.
