Ma’onah sent a letter to the UN, Condemn Yemen vote on climate change
The Association Ma’onah for Human Rights and Immigration (AMHRI) announced that it has submitted a formal communication to the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of human rights in the context of climate change regarding the vote cast by the internationally recognized Yemeni government delegation against the United Nations General Assembly resolution on legal obligations related to addressing climate change, which was adopted in New York on 20 May 2026 by an overwhelming majority of Member States.
The Association stated that the vote raises serious human rights and legal concerns in light of the catastrophic climate impacts facing #Yemen, including drought, floods, desertification, and the deterioration of food and water security amid the ongoing armed conflict.
AMHRI further noted that opposing efforts aimed at strengthening international climate protection frameworks may negatively affect Yemenis’ opportunities to access international climate support, protection, and financing mechanisms, thereby impacting their fundamental rights, including the rights to life, health, food, water, and a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment.
The Association also called on the United Nations and its special procedures to closely follow up on this issue and to ensure the participation of affected Yemeni communities and civil society organizations in the formulation of national climate-related positions, in line with the principles of climate justice and human rights.
