AMHRI Participates in Recognizing “Little Yemen” in the Bronx as a Cultural District
New York – Sunday, October 18, 2026
The Association Ma’onah for Human Rights and Immigration (AMHRI) participated on Sunday in the official signing ceremony at which New York State Governor Kathy Hochul signed historic legislation enabling the recognition of “Little Yemen” in the Bronx, New York City, as an officially designated cultural district. This landmark step reflects institutional recognition of the Yemeni American community’s cultural identity and its significant contributions to the economic, social, and cultural life of the United States.
AMHRI was represented at the ceremony by Mr. Aziz Zaid, Vice President of the Association, and Mr. Raafat Haider, Public Relations Officer. Their participation reflects the Association’s ongoing commitment to addressing issues affecting Yemeni communities and immigrants, promoting their cultural and social rights, and strengthening their participation in public life.
The signing of legislation A.7033D/S.6487C marks the culmination of sustained community and legislative efforts to secure official recognition for “Little Yemen.” The legislation authorizes the New York State Council on the Arts to designate the area as a cultural district, creating opportunities for local cultural institutions to benefit from state-sponsored support programs, grants, and technical assistance.
AMHRI welcomed this significant milestone, describing it as a historic achievement for the Yemeni American community and a positive affirmation of cultural diversity, social integration, and the fight against discrimination and hatred. The Association emphasized that this recognition also honors the contributions made by generations of Yemeni immigrants to American society, despite the many challenges they have faced.
The Association also expressed its sincere appreciation to Governor Kathy Hochul, members of the New York State Senate and Assembly, Yemeni American community leaders, and those who spearheaded the “Little Yemen” initiative, particularly Dr. Debbie Almontaser, Mr. Zaid Nagi, and Mr. Yahya Obeid, in recognition of their substantial efforts and dedication to achieving this important milestone.
AMHRI emphasized that the official recognition of the district goes beyond symbolic significance. It represents a meaningful opportunity to preserve Yemeni cultural heritage and identity, support cultural institutions and small businesses, strengthen the Yemeni American community’s presence and participation in American society, and advance the principles of equal citizenship, peaceful coexistence, and mutual respect among diverse cultures.
